After I was released from my job 3 weeks ago, I felt pretty bad. A few tweets and a blog entry later, I had fellow twitter folk calling me about opportunities. I immediately started sending out resumes for postings on Dice.com, but one in particular on careerbuilder.com. There was only ONE network engineer position that needed VMware experience in the whole city of Louisville. I submitted my resume on Tuesday, received a call on Wednesday for an interview on Thursday, did so well that I came in for a second interview on Friday and received a verbal offer Friday night. Needless to say, my spirits were incredibly high for only being unemployed for 4 days. In our current economy, not many people are this lucky.
I've been there for 2 weeks so far and I'm slowly getting used to the environment. I've got major plans for upgrading the infrastructure. One reason I was hired is because they want me to architect and deploy their VMware infrastructure and also take over the current cisco administration. Nothing yet is currently in place, so once the budget is proposed I can get to work. Thus far, I only have one HP server that is currently being used as a DR box. I have upgraded that box to ESXi 4 free and have done 3 P2Vs so far of their most critical servers. There are a few things I wish to personally accomplish on this box because I don't have the capabilities at home. I am going to run vSphere inside of ESXi. My plan is to build 3 ESX4 servers, including vCenter, Cisco Nexus 1000v, and 2 or 3 servers all inside of ESXi. I also want to setup VDI if I have enough power/storage. I really just want to create my own playground.
I've had a streak of good luck lately. Last weekend I left Churchill Downs up $50, which rarely happens. It presented itself again today at the VMware vSphere launch event. My name was drawn to win either a VMware polo or backpack. I immediately said "POLO!", but the dude said they only had XL, so I went with the backpack. If any VMware folk out there want to send me a polo feel free o send one this way!
Wedding planning (or my lack of) is the other thing going on. My fiance Lauren, is really doing an astounding job. She has been very intense about getting everything booked immediately even though our wedding isn't until next June. Up next on the list is booking the DJ and photographer. She has been taking photos of wedding dresses, and she looks beautiful in them, I can't wait for the wedding day.
Other than getting used to not taking the bus and having to drive my car now (which I wish i didn't have to do), not much else is happening. Thanks for reading.
