There hasn't been much talk (and sometimes that can be a good thing) about the quiet release of Update 2 to different products of the vSphere suite. There have been some pitfalls already, but it seems as if most of them have been addressed relatively quickly.
vSphere products with new updates:
- ESX(i) Update 2
- vCenter Update 2 (includes Update Manager Update 2)
- VMware vCenter Update Manager 4 Update 2
- VMware Data Recovery 1.2
- VMware Consolidated Backup 1.5 Update 2
VMware ESX 4.0 Update 2 Release Notes. Highlights:
- FT has been added for more Intel processors
- ESXTOP now has the ability to see NFS stats
- You have to upgrade VMware Tools on all your VMs
- The update contains nearly 30 patches for the Rollup
- Quite a few bugs have been fixed, but nothing dramatic
VMware ESXi 4.0 Update 2 Release Notes. Highlights:
- FT has been added for more Intel processors
- You have to upgrade VMware Tools on all your VMs
- RESXTOP now has the ability to see NFS stats
- Update contains about 8 patches
- More bugs fixed
VMware vCenter Server 4.0 Update 2 Release Notes. Highlights:
- A few customization improvements for some linux guest OSs
- Lots of bug fixes, some good ones around vDS
Some pitfalls already seen:
Upgrading VMware Tools in a virtual desktop causes PCoIP connections to fail - KB Article: 1022830
- A solution and workaround has already been posted
ESX 4.0 Update 2 Compatibility with Cisco Nexus 1000V Virtual Ethernet Module - KB Article: 1022721
- Cisco Nexus 1000V release 4.0(4)SV1(2)or Cisco Nexus 1000V release 4.0(4)SV1(3) is required along with ESX 4.0 Update 2 VEM module
- Solution has been posted. Makes me wish the 1000v was more tightly integrated and you didn't have to worry about stuff like this.
- Upgrade vCenter first...always
Update 6/18/2010**
Thanks to Rod Mach (@chamdor) for pointing me towards Chad Sakacc's blog (@sakacc) about some issues with the EMC storage and integrated components.
- 1) A known issue with vSphere 4 u2 CX connectivity via iSCSI :
The path status for the CLARiiON iSCSI storage system changes from dead to active and from active to dead when the system is accessed through the ESX/ESXi software iSCSI initiator - 2) EMC’s Virtual Storage Integrator plugin will throw an error after your update 2 on vCenter. There is an update which will be posted in days.
